Diverticulosis/Diverticulitis

Diverticulosis is the formation of small pouches or sacs (diverticula) in the walls of the colon, which generally do not cause symptoms. However, if one or more diverticula become inflamed or infected, diverticulitis develops, a more serious condition that can cause pain and complications.

Symptoms

  • Diverticulosis: Generally does not present symptoms, but some patients may experience bloating or mild abdominal discomfort.
  • Diverticulitis: Severe abdominal pain, especially in the lower left part of the abdomen, fever, changes in bowel habits (diarrhea or constipation), and nausea.

Treatment

  • Diverticulosis: High-fiber diet to prevent complications.
  • Diverticulitis: In mild cases, treatment with antibiotics and a liquid diet. In severe cases, hospitalization or surgery may be necessary to remove the affected part of the colon.
