Recto-Vaginal Fistula

The rectovaginal fistula is an abnormal connection between the rectum and the vagina, allowing the involuntary passage of intestinal contents from the rectum to the vagina. This condition may result from complications in difficult childbirths, previous surgeries, inflammatory bowel diseases (such as Crohn's disease), or severe infections in the pelvic region.

Among the most common symptoms of a rectovaginal fistula are:

  • Presence of gas or stool in the vagina.
  • Recurrent irritation, discomfort, or infections in the vaginal area.
  • Pain or discomfort in the perineal region.

The rectovaginal fistula can have a significant impact on the quality of life and emotional well-being of patients. Therefore, it is essential to seek specialized medical attention to properly diagnose the issue and provide effective treatment.

In my practice, I conduct a detailed evaluation to determine the most appropriate therapeutic approach based on the characteristics of the fistula, its size, location, and underlying cause. Treatment usually requires surgical intervention, and some of the options include:

  • Primary repair: Direct surgical closure of the fistula in simple cases.
  • Use of tissue flaps: Advanced techniques that use nearby tissues to reinforce the affected area and promote healing.
  • Combined therapies: In complex cases, these may include treatment of associated diseases, such as Crohn's, before performing the surgical intervention.

My goal is to provide treatment that not only effectively resolves the fistula but also preserves functionality and improves the quality of life for each patient. If you exhibit compatible symptoms or have been diagnosed with a rectovaginal fistula, do not hesitate to contact me for professional and personalized care.
