Pilonidal Sinus

The pilonidal sinus is a condition that occurs in the upper area of the buttocks, just above the intergluteal cleft. It consists of a small cavity or cyst that can fill with hair, dead tissue, and impurities. This cyst can become infected, causing pain, swelling, redness, and, in some cases, purulent discharge.

Symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness in the intergluteal cleft area.
  • Swelling and redness around the affected area.
  • Discharge of pus or blood if the cyst becomes infected.
  • Formation of a hole or fistula in the skin, indicating the presence of a chronic infection.

Treatment

  • Conservative treatment: In some cases, the condition can be managed with antibiotics and local hygiene care.
  • Drainage: If the cyst becomes infected, it may be necessary to drain the pus to relieve pain.
  • Surgery: In recurrent or complicated cases, surgical removal of the cyst is the most effective treatment. This may involve the removal of the cyst and possible skin reconstruction.
  • Prevention of recurrences: In some cases, follow-up is necessary to prevent the cyst from reappearing.
